The main speaker at the dedication ceremony of the cemetery atGettysburg, Edward Everett, sent this note about what came to be called theGettysburg Address to President Lincoln: “I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours asyou did in two minutes.”
