“Nobody heals himself by wounding others.” - Anonymous

For God’s sake learn to listen. You’ll do more good than you realize because the person – ANY person! - on the other end of the conversation has not been heard enough. Say, ‘how are you?’ and mean it. Say/ask clarifying things only. Don’t ever accuse, or threaten, or judge.
Ever.

Discuss, as calmly as possible, ‘What’s the worst possible thing that could happen here?’ See the big picture – either things aren’t as bad as you thought and you should go ahead, OR things really could go from bad to worse and maybe you need to cut your loses right now and get out.
Conclusion: some bridges need to be crossed, others to be burnt.

You can take the country boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the country boy, and Lincoln was a country boy through and through. Thus, you might have been surprised, if you had knocked on the Lincoln White House door, to have the door answered by the President himself - in his shirtsleeves and/or slippers. You might have been non-plussed seeing him use his own spoon in the White House sugar bowl. And there's no telling how you'd react to the following story that may not be true but certainly has the ring of authenticity about it. One evening, they say, before going to the theater, Lincoln was standing at the foot of the stairs in the White House with some friends and explained in his own distinctively breezy manner, ‘Mary's still upstairs puttin' on her trottin' harness.'’

Maybe like me there have been times when you've learned the hard way that you’ve leaned the ladder of your ambition against the wrong building.

'We have as all will agree a free Government where every man has a right to be equal with every other man. In this great struggle this form of Government and every form of human right is endangered if our enemies succeed.'

‘Slavery was established by decree of Almighty God… it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation… it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts.’
