From “The Human Condition: A User’s Manual,” by Arnold Kunst

One of the inestimable benefits of an education –everything
from a GED to a Ph.D. - Is developing the capacity to handle what’s called
delayed gratification – the ability to go beyond the boring and the tedious for
as long as it takes to reach fulfillment – whatever that may mean. Employers
may not be interested that you got an A in molecular biology, or that you know
how to divide fractions, but they’ll pay top dollar for that delayed
gratification thing.
