Logical inconsistencies did not get past the
razor-sharp mind of Abraham Lincoln. During the Lincoln-Douglas debated in 1858
Lincoln dismissed Douglas’s argument with devastating effect. ‘Any attempt to
twist his views into a call for perfect social and political equality with
Negroes was but a specious and fantastic arrangement of words, by which a man
can prove a horse chestnut to be a chestnut horse.’
